I would appreciate suggestions as to hardware and rigging to convert my roller furling headsail to a self tending sail. I have a hank on staysail with Harstock lever and headstay and running backstays which I removed but could replace if it would be a better choice to make self tending. Richard

Do you mean...

...like found on Island Packets, with the L-shaped aluminum bar that swings across? I'd like to do that too!

self-tending jib

Are you thinking of a traveler-type setup? This would not require the deck-sweeping jib-boom that Island Packet and some others use. The traveler-type setup does require substantial room between the mast and the lower end of the stay - the traveler has to be far enough aft of the sail's clew that the sail sets properly. If your mast is set well forward, you might need a mighty small sail (foot dimension) to fit all this in. The jib-boom is a possible solution to that problem. Get a full-line catalog from Harken. It is full of deck-hardware-setup diagrams. They also sell traveler setups that can be curved so that the jibsheet lead remains a constant length as the sail crosses over when tacking. Fred T
