Help --- I'm in the process of installing the Garmin 3010 network system. The power/data cable that comes with the MFD unit is only about 6 ft long. Talking to Garmin - that is the longest they make. They don't have available any other length or bare cable of that type. Needless to say I need the cable around 15ft. I'm on a Hunter 356 and going from the pedestal to the rear panel transom wall in the port locker. I've been searching the net with no luck. The tubing going down the pedestal is already pretty full of cables for the instruments and power already there. I'm trying to keep the cable runs to a minimum. Garmin tried to tell me that they make their own cable - right.... Can anyone point me to a supplier.. This cable has 10 data lines 24awg plus 2 power 18awg. Jim S/V Java

Custom cable

Jim, I'm an electrician and if it were me I'd splice a piece of 12 conductor 18 guage wire to your Garmin cable and cll it a day. The reason for 18 gauge on all conductors is to keep it simple to find, try a search on the web typing "custom cable" we have an outfit here in NY that will supply just about any thing.Another thought is a 10 conductor 24 gauge for the data and 2 conductors for the power. Do you need all the data conductors?? If you strike out finding the cable let me know RAD ~/)~

Long Shot

You could try this but I am not sure they have too much specialty stuff. www.gpsgeek.com

Wow Dan That hits the mark...

That will work.. That will keep the number of splices down to a workable number. I really hate making splices, it leads to failure... Jim S/V Java

Well Jaquar is out

Dan, Cable cataglog looks great until you call them and find out it has to be manufactured! They don't have it in stock. I could order a few thousand feet but not 30 feet. So the quest goes on.... Jim S/V Java

Mmmmmmm.....

On Garmin's website, they list several network cables - one up to 40 feet and bulk connectors and cable. Maybe these are the wrong type but they are made to connect various Garmin network devices together such as the radar scanner, etc. You can even order them from the website. An RJ45 looks like a slightly oversize modular phone connector. Looking at the 3010 install manual, you will probably need to run separate 12V & gnd to the 3010's NMEA/Power cable. Don, Even if had paid full price this would have still been a problem. Garmin won't even discuss it. Rodney, Yeah I've seen the same thing and in the end will have to run separate cables for power and data, plus a network cable. The network cable they sell is just plain old cat 5 network with their special screwdown connector. Things are going to be crowded in the pedestal guard due to all this cable that needs to run. What kinda boggles the mind is on some of this equipment from Garmin they give you 40ft of cable but for the thing that really counts only 6 ft. Jim S/V Java

Jim, how right you are. Makes you wonder if they've ever installed a system on real boat rather than hook it up in lab. Went through the same thing with Raymarine Seatalk network and having the Radar & Garmin Chartplotter at the helm. Talk about pedastal guard full of cables :).

Garmin

I sure am irritated with Garmin on a general basis. It seems to me they make it so difficult. I bought a new/old boat last spring. Turns out its chart plotter was the G cards which they have discontinues. How long will it be before they discontinure the newer C cards. I did have a bluechart CD from my old boat, but of course it won't work with the GPS on the new boat, even if I interface it into my laptop. I bought a handheld GPS that would allow me to use the bluechart on my laptop, but I was not able to get all the charts I had paid for to work even after calling Garmin. What a racket!

Thanks Rad - but

I think what I'm going to do is run a separate power line along with two cat 5 ethernet cables. I still need to check out the wiring but believe all I will need is a 8/24awg lines. BUT just in case, I think I need a 15ft run from the pedesdal to the install location. Damn this is frustating, it should be so simple... Jim S/V Java

Jim

I feel your pain. "Every chore on a boat is simple, and the simplest task is difficult." I have yards of 2-strand twisted pair copper tinned wire in 12,14, and 16 awg (in colors that would blow Elton John away). If any of this would help, it's yours.

Think I'm getting closer

A company in Austin, passed me to AtoZ Industries in Chicago who called back today. They have a 18awg 12 strand 30 ft cable that they are sending for free as a sample. Hopefully this will do the job. If not I found at work today a pile of old 12 strand serial cable in twisted pairs. I'll use that as a standby if the cable from AtoZ doesn't work out. Thanks Warren and everyone else who added to the discussion. Jim S/V Java
