Sailing with a System - Do you Mark your Boat/Rigging

Oct 22, 2014
CAL 35 Cruiser moored EVERETT WA
Here is a simple system to consider for marking your boat and rigging. It will help you with sailing consistency.

Wally Cross from System Sailing, provides a how to to mark your boat and rigging. This is intended to give you a more repeatable set up for your boat. Less feel and seat of your pants sailing, more measurable trim actions so you can repeat the successful sets.

Winter is a great time to plan for spring racing.

Winter is a good time to plan, but he suggests temps in the 70's for getting the numbers to stick. Nice idea for marking the spinnaker halyard to coordinate with jib furling and boat heading after rounding the windward mark. On the International 505 site they suggest marking not just by number, but by color. Light air settings might be all green, for example, shifting to blue for medium air and black for heavy conditions. Makes it easy to tell at a glance if your boat is set up properly for the conditions in general. Then you can finesse the adjustments to account for waves and other details as needed.
