Can anyone tell me how long it can generally take to sail from say Mentor, OH area to Put in Bay, for example.

That's about a hundred miles John. Or two pretty long days. Suggest an early start with a layover at Vermilion. Second day won't be too bad. From Vermilion you go past me in Huron in less than two hours. With decent conditions another five into the bay. We like to go to Middle Bass and then take the ferry over and back. The state park marina is reasonable and takes reservations. PIB can be very crowded.

I agree with everything Ed has said. A couple of additional comments that may help you. Put-in-Bay is usually much quieter during the week. Friday and Saturday nights and around holidays are always very busy. We are very selfcontained (generator, wind generator, and solar panels) so we prefer the mooring balls when we are there. The price is reasonable and includes unlimited use of the water taxi. There are a lot of different things to do so allow at least of couple of days..or more. Hope that hellps.

We sailed last year from Sandusky to Fairport. It took a long day and we were sailing West to East on a beam reach with 8 - 12kt winds WSW. Sailing East to West could take a bit longer aginst the prevailing winds. Should factor that in and watch the weather you leave in.
