Basically looking at a used C30 (1986) at the moment, the sea-trial is next week. [Can't wait already excited] It's my first potential cruiser purchase, I've sailed dinghies and small catamarans for years though. We've had the hull sounded, and the initial survey inside, I'm waiting on the full survery report to come back... Something we did find though however was that the oil-pan / dipstick join section (beneath the diesel) had lots of rust. Have any of you existing Catalina owners experienced this before??? The rust itself appeared to be limited to just the join on the 2 previous mentioned sections and wasnt extended to the rest of the motor in anyway that we could see. Suggestions / recommendations would be greatly appreciated..!

Rust

1. Find out where the rust is coming from. Sometimes it is as simple as from a leaking raw water pump. That's relatively easy to fix - replace or rebuild the pump because the internal seals are starting to go. 2. Scrape the rust away and see how deep it is. 3. If it's not too deep, scrape all the rest of the rust away with files and bronze brushes, and just repaint it with rustoleum or other rust resistant paint, and add a top coat to match the the color of the rest of the engine. Had the same problem, fixed as above, no problems in four years.

Rusted Oil Pan

Had the same problem on my boat (1987 TRBS Hull #4961). Because Catalinas have a wet bilge, I believe this is likely a common problem. Its an easy fix, except for access which is a little tight. Brush away the rust with a wire brush (duct tape one to a longer handle to reach). Then treat with an appropriate rust treatment and re-paint (again, a brush taped to a longer handle will assist). I try to keep my bilge dry to prevent this type of problem from recurring.

I replaced mine

I just finished replacing mine. I did pull the engine right out of the boat but you can lift it enough to just replace the pan. It would take you a couple days to do but it is not difficult to pull the engine.

Thanks

Many thanks for all the suggestions - if the sea-trial goes well I'll be doing the above :)
