Slowly rehabing a '79 H30. I have noted that the rudder action is not smooth. Is there a bearing that requires periodic attention or replacement? Does anyone know how much up & down play is normal?? How about pulling the rudder on these old "C" boats?? -Thanks in advance!

Rudder bearings

On many Hunters of this era there is a rudder stuffing box that acts as the bearing surface for the rudder shaft. In older boats such as yours, the packing gland and/or rudder shaft often develop corrosion or holes. Sometimes this is a source of water in the bilge. Many older boats have had this part replaced. At a minimum, you want to check it and repack if necessary. This could also be the source of your drag. I would also check for a bent rudder shaft. Running aground can do this fairly easily. Rudder will probably have to be dropped if bent very much.

Rudder

I have a 76 h30 and I just dropped my rudder and reglassed it. The upper bearing for the rudder was a 2X4 with a hole cut in it. I replaced it with a piece of nylon with a hole in it for the top of the rudder. I repaired the lower bearing surface by following the West System repair for the rudder post. I involves waxing your rudder post and putting it back in and injecting a epoxy/graphite mixture in the post area to restore the bearing surface. No problem since I did this. Good luck
