Rotted decking in the cabin DS II

What is the best way to replace the plywood decking found in the cuddy cabin of my Daysailor II. What is the best material to use? Since the opening is small, I figure about 4 pieces to complete (how should I splice together - battens on the seams?). Should I caulk edges along the hull? What should I do with the broken up styrafoam in the bilge? replace or just purge? Thanks.

Douglas -First, I would not junk the floation, though I might replace it. Closed cell insulation board is a good candidate. Then, I'd probably use marine plywood cut to fit then painted with a good epoxy paint. I wouldn't worry about joining the pieces if the fit together reasonable well.Justin - O'day Owners' Web

new floor

I am just finishing up installing a new floor (among other things) in a boat very similar (it's actually an American Fiberglass Corp. Boat, if anyone knows anything about them pls. email me!). I drilled a few holes to figure out the depth of the old floor. Then I set the depth on a circular saw and cut away the old floor. I sistered up any stringers that looked quesionable using WEST system and Luan plywood. (No need to buy marine ply... as long as the Luan is painted liberally in epoxy) Then I screwed down the new floor (again, 1/2" luan. I taped the seams with 2" glass tape, and then layed down another layer of cloth and glass the whole thing in. It was fairly easy, just a little time consuming. I am in the process of rebuilding the mast step with, you guessed it: 1/2" Luan and West system (thickeded with the high density filler). Any questions please email me... chris
