I spent a quiet day in Chesapeake City with rain drizzling down as I dozed and read. Bob T stopped by to pick up his jacket. Everyone who comes aboard the boat for a sail leaves something. Aside from that and a brief visit aboard Robin, Ex. Syltu, it was a day of lazy rest.

Link to Syltu (See “Huntington, LI post”):

I woke up to chill even with the cabin heater going due to a couple of ports I had left open to regulate the heat. I switched on the radiator driven by the Newport diesel cabin heater for the first time since last winter. I only had to use this supplement a couple times last year so I knew it was cold out.

Heading down the canal, the air had that deep chill that tells you frost can’t be far behind. Hard to believe that Bob and I were sitting in almost uncomfortable heat just a couple days before. I saw only the hint of fall colors coming down the C &D to the anchorage but the trees now looked as if I had fallen asleep for a couple of weeks. A year ago, I was still in Mystic yet here I was in the cockpit wearing gloves.

The wind was fair but to light to motivate me to set sails in the cold and slat away on a run so I just kept the engine running until I let the anchor go in Worton Creek where I spent a quiet night listening to the rain on the cabin top.

I got in touch with Rich H but he is under the weather so my meeting the fellow who was such a help in designing my fuel polishing system will have to wait.

I’ll be underway as soon as the rain blows through. I haven’t quite decided on a destination yet. The winds are predicted to be strong so I may not want to try the channel into Kent Narrows. I may run up to Chestertown which I have always wanted to see although that stretch up the open part of the river may be a bit lively.

The last few years I've really enjoyed a few days up in Baltimore Inner Harbor. You can anchor right by the Constellation and the WWII submarine for free. There's a $15/a day (if I remember correctly) to land your dinghy but you can then land at any of the many docks around the city for 24 hours. There's also a great water taxi unlimited at $12/day. I was chatting with one of the water taxi skippers. He got to Baltimore by taking his trawler from San Diego through the Panama Canal to the Caribbean and then up to Baltimore.

While the middle of a city is not like being up a quite Chesapeake street, it's very quiet on the hook after 11PM. Also a great city to explore. I love the Fells Point area that's been brought back from the dead (but still has it's raw edges).
