Hello all,

We are going to stop throwing money into our old Volvo MD2B and repower with something that is factory fresh. I see a lot of talk about Beta Marine. But I would like to know what other options that people are happy with.

We need something in the 25 to 30 HP range.

I would like to know what kind of challenges and pitfalls some of you have found in planning this kind of project.

Thank you in advance,

Sailmaster

Went from a Universal M25XPC based on a Kubota block to a Yanmar 3YM30 in my new boat. No comparison in smoothness and noise level. I believe the Beta uses Kubota blocks. I'm a huge advocate of Yanmar now.

Before you form a final opinion on Yanmar or Beta, do remember that both are far more modern in their technology than the blocks they each used in the 80's. Change comes slowly to our little niche markets, but it does happen.
A friend of mine is nowadays an approved installer for Betamarine in our area as well as being a professional diesel mechanic. He really likes the current engines from them.

I would guess that either would serve you well. Biggest issue is which one will soak up the least $$ to install in your particular boat.

+1 if a yanmar wont fit start looking into other brands, a 4-b cummins or a 4-108 perkins are both awesome engines, i think the cummins can be had in a 3 cyl model as well. i know a guy in my marina that has a 4-108 with 380k hours without any maintenance other than filters and fluid changes.

its an old tub, not sure what it is, the owner was probably there when dirt was invented and isnt all there in the head anymore so info is iffy but he claims 380 and the hobbs has 220 since he said he replaced it back in the 50's
