Friends, I have a two blade propeller (16- 13 bore is 1") that I would like to replace. I have a local dealer that can actually make a 3 blade propeller for me. Does any one know the exact Diameter and pitch for this 3 blade replacement on this boat. Boat specs: 1. Yanmar 30 Hp. 1989 Diesel 2. Hunter Legend 35.5 3. Engine was recently repair. Charlie

NO Way, Don't do it

There have been loads of posts to this question before. There is no consensus on the 'right' answer and some very heated debates about it. Pro's: better motoring than fixed 2 blade and less vibration. Con's: Terrible sailing performance due to high drag. Best option is the 2 blade feathering prop. It has the motoring performance of the 3 blade and the sailing performance of the folding prop.

I agree with Alan.

Charles: I would agree with Alan on this point. There are too many good props that work well without spending a lot of money on a custom prop that may or may not do the job for you. My first suggestion for many sailors is to have their two bladed prop re-worked into a non-slip tip by Bay Props in Alameda, CA. This is about $140 plus freight (two ways). If this does not "trip your trigger" then you may want to look at the more expensive options like a Campbell 3-blade Sailor or a feathering prop that will clear your wallet of a couple thousand bucks.

prop shop

I won't comment on the 2 vs 3 blade or folding/feather issue other to say that it is your boat and you wallet.Pro's and con's and it really depends on you. However if you choise to go with a fixed 3 blade have a good prop shop run the numbers in there computer program or Michigan Propeller will do it from there web site. See the link below. Good Luck!

3 blade prop

I have a 1995 35.5 with a Michigan Propeller fixed 3 blade prop. Improved motoring performance (important in the Pacific Northwest) and I don't believe it affects sailing performance that much unless you are racing. If that's really important spend the money and get a max prop.

I just cant understand....

...how people can get such different readings of the same prop on the same boat! Lyle says "I don't believe it affects sailing performance that much unless you are racing." What has racing got to do with how much drag is created by a 3 blade. I agree that no racing sailor in his right mind would put a 3 blade prop on his boat, WHY?... because there is a very definite difference in sailing performance. I've sailed my model boat with a 3 blade and mine has a 2-blade feathering. Easily 1.5 knots difference. If that doesn’t matter to you then by the 3 blade, it's cheaper. But if sailing performance is important then the 3 blade in most definitely not for you!
