When we de-rigged the mainsail last season, we noticed that three of the plastic D shackles that connected the sail to the mast inserts were broken (see picture). We cannot locate plastic replacements at our local marine stores. So, we have a couple of questions: 1. Can we use metal D shackles with the clear plastic guards? 2. If not, does anyone know of a source for the plastic shackles? The sail was made by Neil Pryde, and they don't seem to be in the sailboat market any longer.

Sailrite is an excellence source for many sailing needs, including sail hardware. I keep a whole set of spare shackles and slugs. BrianW

Replacing shackles and slugs

Just like Brian said, Sailrite is a good source for replacement shackles and slides. Sit down before you look at the cost of the stainless steel ones. I only put in 3 metal ones- top, middle and bottom of main. The rest I used the plastic kind and keep lots of spares. I had an experience in a jibe when the whole main "unzipped" off the mast, of course at absolutely the wrong time. The metal buys a bit of insurance. Buddy Richardson Cowardly Lion, H28
