engine is a 1981 2 hp evinrude. when I removed the engine cover, the pull rope spring came off. It doesn't look like there's anything to secure the outer end, so do I just rewind it back into place ? thanks.

pls see pics. the 3rd pic is after I have wound up the spring, you can see the outer end is kind of just "hanging loose" in the upper part of the pic.

Not familiar with that engine, but I think the end goes under the spool .. You will probably have to carefully remove the conical nut and gently lift the spool, bringing the loose end up with the spool. you should see an anchor point under there that the end goes into. you don't have to have any tension on the spring yet.. once you've anchored the end and put the nut back on, pull the rope out a foot or so then hold the spool. now wind the rope around the spool .. you may have to pull-hold-wind a couple of times to get enough tension to hold the rope correctly. A good shop probably wouldn't charge ya much if you took the top cowl over there..

I have dealt with this many times. If you look at where the spring fits into the cove you will see a notch type opening on the left hand side. Bend the end of the spring around this as you place the rewind mechanism in place. Attach the holding retaining screw on the outside top of the cover and wind the pull cord around the rewind two to three turns. Don't over tighten spring or you will pull it out again when you pull the starter cord.....
