I've searched the forum for 'spares' and 'spares list' but came up with nothing comprehensive. Has someone posted on here in the past a good basic 'spares list' for boat and engine that you keep onboard? I have a Hunter 36 but I'm sure it would be similar for all larger boats. Thanks

It depends on your cruising plans. An off shore spares list will be more "comprehensive" than one for our protected waters. Our Yanmar engine service manual has spares lists of different types. Did you try the Yanmar site? Try Torrensen Marine who service Yanmar engines. They should be of some help.

One rule I have is that if something breaks, I buy two.
For the engine (coastal cruising) I carry the following:
Spare Impeller
Extra secondary fuel filter
Two extra primary fuel filters
Alternator Belt
Alternator (basically I upgraded my alternator to a 100 amp Ballmar, but I kept the old one).
For other items:
1) Extra Fresh Water Pump
2) Extra Blocks (I've had a couple at the base of the mast break).
3) Backup GPS and Handheld VHF
4) Fuses
5) Light Bulbs

Yeah.. There was an old adage that said something like "The most dangerous thing on an airplane or a sailboat is an appointment calendar."
I always carry a good set of tools, both electrical and mechanical.. some connections, wire, shrink wrap, wire ties, hose clamps, one gallon of oil.. Spray lube, grease.. .. a spare raw water pump impeller and gasket, and filters as noted before..
For the boat, 1 spare hatch dog assy. (the hanging kind that will occasionally get torn off by the genny sheets).. spare lines, a couple of spare blocks.. sail tape, a "handy sticher" and spare thread.. Through hull plugs, some appropriately sized drain/intake hose.. hose splicers.. a selection of roll pins and split rings and cotter pins (male/male hose fittings), Joker valve for head, Gusher rebuild kits for the manual holding tank pump and manual bilge pump.. goggles and fins.. spare winch handles

Hey Main sail, You are better stocked than many West Marine!!! Put a big sign on the boat "Floating Maine Marine".
Don't laugh, I've actually repaired a number of boats over the years out of my spares.
One was three years ago when we came across our next door neighbors on their Sabre 362, dead in a remote cove, on a glass still, windless day and 100+ nm from home. They were waiting for a tow from Morris Yachts on a Sunday.. Cha ching $$$$$.
To make a long story short they had broken a plastic fitting off the side of their manifold for the expansion tank and had no way to back it out nor anything on board that even remotely matched the 1/8 NPT threads. In ten minutes of scavaging though parts bins I had found a 1/8 NPT temperature sending unit and some EZ outs which removed the broken plastic fitting. I put some teflon tape on the 1/8" NPT sending unit, we re-filled with 50/50 antifreeze and they were on their way.
By the time we got back from our cruise there was a case of very, very nice wine, a gift certificate to a great resturaunt and a new 1/8 NPT sending unit on our door step..
Tom estimates we saved him close to $800.00 with tow and emergency Sunday service at Morris Yachts.I hate to ever break down and if I do I had better have the parts to fix it!! Oh and I forgot I also carry a prop puller too...
