I recently bought a Cal 20 that was in really good condition. It was a fresh water boat, but I'm going to moor her in Chesapeak Bay. That means I have to bottom paint, which means I have to get her off the trailer. In contrast to her being in good condition, the trailer needs restored- badly. I was planning on making an A-frame out of 6x6 treated lumber and sling her off of the trailer so I can fit it up. My questions are these: -Can I keep her slung up, her weight off of the keel for an extended period of time? If not, how long do I have to get the trailer fixed up? Can I place her back down on a piece of plywood on the ground, leaving the straps on to keep her from tipping? Thank you in advance

Lifting sling and cradle

I'm also in the early stages of a Cal20 restoration, although in my case I don't have a trailer at all and my boat is in need of repair. Anyway, you can use a sling lift (Seals Spars sells one) from the lift points on the fore and aft pairs of keel bolts. The sling will extend up through the companionway; you'll want to rig either steadying lines or some light braces to keep it from moving. I strongly suggest that rather than leaving it slung, you rig a temporary cradle. Wooden blocks under the keel, four supports (two on each side) to hold it steady, and one at the bow. Don't climb aboard or anything like that until it's back on the trailer.
