Re: [AlbinVega] Vega POLL: Autohelm 1000

Henk brings up a very good point here. I'm considering getting an autopilot
for "Erendira" (#2947) this year.

A friend has an Autohelm 6000 on his Newport 30, and it's definitely one of
those "nice-to-haves." It's nice to engage the autopilot, and go below decks
to make a sandwich, especially when you're singehanding. But I'm not sure
I'd be comfortable doing this on S.F. Bay, with all the traffic, commercial
and otherwise.

Always stay sharp, and keep a lookout.

Dear friends,

I may add a penny to this conversation. I am using the Autohelm 1000 as
well.

I understand there are more sophisticated types , but this one is fine.

It is particularly useful , if and when you should decide to sail single
handed.

There is one matter that needs attention, the Autohelm behaves so well
under normal circumstances that your Vega is sailing all by itself.
However, sometimes there are other boats moving into your direction and
they might have the right of way.
So keep looking donot pick up a newspaper when you use the self steering
device.

I've used an Autohelm 1000 for about 15 years now, same one, never had a
problem of any kind with it. I dont use the windvane attachment at all (came
with the unit), not worth the trouble. The newer model 1000 are somewhat
different in appearance and I dont know if they've been changed internally,
but I would by another one if needed.

Dear Vega sailors,
Thanks for all the replies to my auto pilot inquiry. The tiller pilot of
choice seems to be the Autohelm 1000 mounted on the starboard side of the
cockpit.
For those still using the 0-21 Albin gas engine, I recently ordered a
cutless bearing from Stanton Marine in England, I ordered by mail sending a
personal check. I was sent the bearing, some seals, rings and detailed
instructions on how to make the repair. Zo
