Chuck:
A personal thanks from Ed Davis (Sail # 1868). I can see that you are
taking on a somewhat formidable challenge. I wish you all the best.
I (we) have benefited from Sid's wonderful newsletter for several years. We
started out with Vega # 321 in about 1986 and sold her in about 1995. We had
a [power boat] for three years, then bought Vesper (1868) in 1998.
I have several stories to tell about my experiences with the MD6A and the
Combi drive. I still have both on Vesper and both are doing admirably, but
need some loving care now and then. Additionally, I have recently mounted A
zinc on Vesper, on the keel, just forward of the lower rudder pivot. I went
swimming yesterday and checked it out. It shows signs of pitting which
suggests that it is doing what it is intended to do. I have digital pictures
that I can forward if you like. Not underwater pictures, just snaps that I
took before launching in the spring.
Also, I am looking for some information from somebody who also has a Combi
Drive system. I have loaded the gear box at the forward end of the shaft
with grease. After a 45 minute run up or down the Mystic River, I have
noticed leakage running from the seal where the shaft enters the gear box.
It is liquid. It is a very dense, dark liquid. It could even be a mixture
of grease and engine oil. My concern is that, when I loaded the gear box
with grease from a grease gun, (a high-pressure grease gun) I may have
ruptured the seal between the gear box and the engine. So, what I am looking
for is someone who might be familiar with that seal; the one between the
gearbox and the engine. Could I have destroyed that seal and allowed engine
oil to enter the gear box, as well as allowing grease to enter the engine?
Anyway, here's a little meat for an item for the newsletter.
I join the many who feel the Vega is a boat worth preserving, and this
is best done by sharing information.
Good luck, Amigo. I will assist where I can, and will appreciate what
you do.

Ed and Hilda Davis
Vesper, # 1868
