A: Might be a replacement motor.

B: You will likely get much more current info here but the "Boat Reviews" all point to Yanmars. C: There is a detail sheet for the H30 on the Cherubini site but it does not mention the make of diesel. See: http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=204587#a=1888331 Be sure to replace the '#' with an ampersand. Ampersands will not display on this site, you get this -> &. D: Search the "Forum Archives" for more Renault info.

yanmar

yanmar was the engine used from the factory. I visited hunter in alachua, florida who said they have no records of the early built boats. also each boat was "HOMEMADE" which means experimental until the bugs where worked out which explains so many small differences on the same models. We are on our own so whatever works for you is the answer. Tobe, 79 hunter 33, cool breeze. I found the wrong size prop(15x13)on mine. Put on(14x12) no smoke-zoom zoom!

re: Renault Diesel

Hey, I've seen several single cylinder Renaults in H27's Usualy a Yanmar YSM12 in the H30. There is ONE distributer of Renault parts they are in TX. I'll look thru my notes and try to find a name and address.

'78 Hunter 30?

A Hunter 30 of 1978 is NOT an 'experimental' or 'homebuilt' boat and not even very early– the type debuted in either fall 1974 or VERY early 1975 and by 1978 the model was pretty much established. I would be very disappointed to hear that Hunter disowns your boat. With the original 25 it was what made the Luhrs brothers and Hunter worth $24 million by 1979. The major Renault diesel importer used to be Guy Couache in either West Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale, who was/is supposedly the sole importer of Renault diesel parts. But you might try sourcing the Winnebago LeSharo motor home through web servers since, when Winnebago commandeered all the Renault-diesel part numbers for it, a now-thriving 'grey-market' business in imported Renault diesel parts sprang up on the Web. There are people who speak French and will bring the parts in for you. J Cherubini II JComet@aol.com

Epic voyages

The only 'epic voyages' I know of in a Hunter, besides those of Warren Luhrs in his racing 54s, were taken by a guy with a Hunter 25 in about 1976. He had a small diesel installed under the companionway steps (probably a Renault), there was a steering vane for singlehanded sailing, and for some reason he painted the Formica bulkheads inside a light blue or something. The story was he was taking off round the world– but we never heard from him again! You can derive whatever you want from that! [laugh] In any case if you have a well-cared-for deep-keel H-30 I don't see why with proper preparation you could not sail it anywhere. In the '70s MacGregor Yacht offered a $25,000 prize for the fastest time from California to Hawaii singlehanding a trailerable sailboat. The winner was a MacGregor-built Venture 21. It just goes to show you– prudence is key in all things seagoing. J Cherubini II JComet@aol.com
