Raytheon Tiller Autohelms

Is anyone using a Raytheon ST1000 Plus or ST2000 Plus Autohelm on their
Vega? If so, is the ST1000 adequate or do you recommend the ST2000?

I've started singlehanding my Vega (#2947), "Erendira," and am thinking that
an autohelm would be more helpful than using that cheap tiller-tamer.

I am using the Autohelm 800 which is the same as the 1000 without the
fluxgate compass feature.
Works great in light conditions under engine power. Has difficulty holding
course under heavy seas, especially when going downwind, even when motoring.
I don't know that a more powerful unit, ST-2000, would make any difference
in this limitation.

Wow !! an Autohelm 800 !!! I didn't think any were still around. Cin Cin had one onboard when I bought her 20 years ago, and it worked great while motoring and was only OK when hard on the wind, however I had a bad habit back then of not reefing soon enough and sure as heck the internal motor burned up trying to keep up with the weather helm. For the next two days I had to hand steer (single-handed), no fun. After comparing spec's in the mid 90's , I settled for a Navico, they offered two tiller models, I believe 1000, and 2000. At any rate I took the more powerful of the two, and find that it doesn't seem to work any better than the 800 when off the wind. My personal opinion, is that none of them work very well down wind. Having said that, I would'nt go anywhere without it.
