I recently attempted to remove the plastic cover on the raw water strainer on my Catalina 34. I finally gave up for fear of breaking the whole thing. Sooner or later I know that I will need to unscrew it to clean the element. Any suggestions on how to do it without breaking the darn thing? I have a Catalina 34 1987 model. The strainer is housed inside a clear plastic cylinder. Any suggestions?

Strainer Removal

Bill Try using an oil filter wrench, the tool used to remove oil and diesel filters. A normal sized tool should fit right around the strainer plastic. I actually have two filter wrenches on board, one for the oil filter and one for the diesel secondary filter. I have smaller diameter oil filters because of the alternator bracket upgrade, which required a narrower oil filter. Even if it breaks, you should easily be able to replace it, I think it's a Sherwood, available at West Marine, Boat US, all the usual suspects. Stu
