raw water pump flywheel jammed

The raw water pump flywheel on my volvo penta md2b seems to be jammed. I pulled the part off and tried to disassemble, but can't seem to get the impeller out. Also, there's a decent amount of rust on the outside, and I'm concerned that rust may have frozen parts and I may need to replace the whole thing...

The pump part is Jabsco 1673-7001 and there's an 8 1/2" flywheel attached.

Having never done anything like this before, I'm not sure exactly how to approach the issue. Any advice would be most appreciated. I'm in the New York City area.

May be you can replace it: See if the dimensions are the same.

NJL.. here is what that pump looks like inside.
The "flywheel" ?? Is it actually a pulley for belt drive? It can be removed from the shaft. The ball bearings are probably shot and the seal too.. I am not recommending these guys but they have a rebuild kit. If you are not comfortable with this work, ya may be able to buy the kit and get a mechanic to repair the pump.. or you can replace the pump and put the pulley on the new one. Good Luck with it.

You're right, wrong terminology. I guess it would be the pulley for the belt drive.
Anyone have any idea where I might find a mechanic (near NYC) that could do a rebuild?

I ordered a replacement from CLR Marine. Seemed easier than derusting, painting and paying someone to install the major service kit. We'll see how it works out though. I still have to figure out how to swap the pulley wheel...

Good solution..You should be able to play with the old one and see if you can turn it into a useful spare.. but with a new one at just a bit over twice the price of the kit, ya now have a good one at not very much more once the rebuild cost is included.. Good luck with it !

njl-you may need a 3 jaw puller to get that pulley(flywheel) off. If you try beating it with a hammer to get it off you most likely will bend it and ruin it.
Also I rebuilt the water pump on my engine. The stainless shaft inside was VERY soft. I tried tapping it out with a hammer and I mushroomed the threads. I had to cut them down to get the nut back on. And your raw water pump is made of iron? That is odd. Wouldn't seem to last very long made of iron or carbon steel.
Anyway to get that pulley off and if you go further in the dis assembly, a product called PB Blaster will help you immensely to loosen up those corroded parts.
edit:OK looks like the pulley is regular steel not the pump body. The pump body is made of bronze. Yeah those pulleys get crappy but you can clean them up and paint them and they will be fine. I would definitely barrow a puller. If you don't want to buy one some auto parts stores will loan you the tool with a deposit.
Also, I think this picture must have been for demonstration purposes only. The bolt is still on the balancer they are pulling,lol. Be sure to remove all retention hardware before utilizing the puller.

Repair shop

Now living in Florida and now not having access to all those needed special tools that I could get when working for a trucking Co. up in NY,I have gone a few times to a marin or auto shop for a few $$$$ to remove parts I can't get off my self with great success.

lost pulley bolt

I finally received the correct Jabsco pump (1673-1000) and got an auto shop to remove the jammed pulley. I scraped, cleaned and repainted the pulley. In the process I lost the bolt that secures the pulley to the pump... Always gotta be something else.

I'm having difficulty locating the pulley part number to order the exact replacement bolt. I'm thinking of just seeing if I can match a bolt at home depot. Good or bad idea?

As long as you can get the right replacement material. Also check to make sure you get the right threads: course or fine. Good luck.
