Hello All,
I have a 2008 Hunter 170 and find it takes what seems like a high effort to raise the centerboard. The board isn't binding on the piviot or in the slot. I'm new to sailing in general, but I just seems like it should be easier to raise the centerboard.
Is this normal for this boat?
Has anyone made any changes to make it easier to raise?

It seems like we should be pulling up from a point on the trailing edge about half way down. Maybe to a spool like on the Mariner?

Thanks for any info,
George

There was a thread in the old site's archives that discussed the addition of a block to the centerboard rigging that added mechanical advantage. I can't find it now but it was a straightforward modification posted by one of the 170 pros that appear on these boards. I must admit that my '99 does take a bit of muscle to lift the thing and I suspect your centerbard weighs more than mine.

It seems to me that those of us with older boats have lighter centerboards. I think they added weight to the board to increase stability, but they did change the hardware. I think the added weight was marginal - 15 pounds or so if I remember right, but I bet it makes a difference.

I have never had a problem raising mine - and I'm not a strong guy. My wife tends to pull on the line while pushing the corner of the board with her foot.

foot technique

We used to have a lot of trouble with the CB on our 2005 H170 until we had it replaced (it had cracks with allowed water in which expanded the form inside which made it really tough to raise and lower, but I think they changed the foam material so this has not been a problem in more recent boats).
Even though the new board raises and lowers smoothly, both my wife and I use the foot techniqe once in a while to help raise the board.
