In my boat-club in Stockholm, we sail regular family-races and in order for all kinds of boats to participate, we use a handicap-system called LYS. I beleive that IOR is another kind of system. My question: is there another wellknown sailingboat, that I could use as comparison to the Hunter 26 ? Like IF, the International Folkboat or some other widely spread model?

PHRF Rating

I am not familiar with the rating systems of the organizations you list, but perhaps they could be compared to the PHRF rating system that is widely used. The PHRF rating for the H 26 is usually 225 or 230. Hope this helps. I can tell you that the H 26 is a fun, but not fast, racer. Ned Christensen Second Wind Eugene, Oregon USA

phrf sites

Toomas, As Ned mentioned, you should take a look at PHRF ratings for various regions. If you enter the letters "phrf" in your search engine, you should be able to come up with a large number of sites on the topic. Amoung others, check out www.ussailing.org/phrf/ and www.yachtrace.com/phrf/soc.mfg.htm Remember that each region can set its own ratings, but they should be similar, since the idea is to set a fair rating for each boat. Our local clubs (I'm on the same lake as Ned) have experimented with both time on time correction and time on distance correction, and personally I think they both do fine. Have fun. IOR

I believe IOR is the International Offshore Rules (or maybe "rating"?), a system developed for offshore racing. PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (?)) is widely used for keelboat racing in the US. PHRF has a very large database of different boats, each of which has its own rating, which give the boat's handicap in seconds per mile. A faster boat will have a higher handicap. The PHRF number is developed from a formula that includes (among other things) waterline length, beam, sail area and whether or not the boat has a spinnaker. If you get a PHRF manual, you should be able to find a boat in it that matches the Folkboat. There should also be a description of the formula so that you can calculate your own PHRF rating.
