Racing a Legend 37.5

Since Hunter doesn't sell the performance/racing cruising designs anymore, Hunter racing is sort of a "dead issue". I have casually raced my 1992 Legend 37.5 successfully over the last two years. I stay away from highly competitive races. I have cruising sails and the Dutchman flaking system. That takes some of the edge off the aerodynamic performance. I limit my racing to club races that are mostly for fun. I also do the Bridge Harbor Yacht Club Memorial Day Regatta in Freeport, TX. Last year we got first place. This year we defended our "title" and got first again. The Galveston Bay PHRF Committee rated my 37.5 at 126 non-spinnaker. They rated the Hunter Legend 40.5 at 130. Very strange that a bigger, faster boat should have a better handicap. If you want to win in a Hunter, get a Hunter Legend 40.5.

Trade you ratings!

Don, I will gladely trade my 117 phrf(Pamlico Sound, coastal NC) for your 126. I too have a 1993 Legend 37.5 with orginal sails, with the only modification being a Jensen flex-o-fold prop. I like you enter mostly the fun and distance races and have corrected no worse than 2nd in class over the past 3/4 years, so can't complain. To date there are no 40.5's racing but I have informally "tested them" on occasion, with out any problems when it came to boat speed. Sounds like you are doing just fine, and I wish you continued success. I Love my boat! Capt. Ron
