It has actually been a requirement for quite some time, doesn't mean builders adhere to it though.... There are metal bowls available for the spin on filters and also for older Racor 500 style filters that are not designated "MA"...

The fuel hose must also meet the same fire standards and should be marked A1-15...

Why would you want to move it? Seems like where it is factory installed is very accessible. I also like the fact that it is located at the top of the system, this makes bleeding the system very easy.

We should be okay. The filter isn't really located in the "engine room", right?

So what I am reading is that the configuration in the photo below is not safe and needs to be changed.

Where do you put the filter unit then? One of the big reasons for this set up is that the engine bilge is separate from the main bilge. If you move it to where paulj has it, then any oil leaked would go into the main bilge and be pumped out by the automatic bilge pump.

I didn't see a metal bowl for this style of filter.

Factory put my filter where PaulJ's is.

Hull 185 came that way.

Is there any way we can forward this to Gary Douglas at Catalina for his comment?

What you are reading is that it does not meet ABYC standards and many insurance companies are wanting to see such systems as fuel, LPG, electrical and seacocks meet the minimum safety standards. If you get a flunkie insurance surveyor you're likely fine but if you get one who has a clue your insurance company may ask you to switch to a metal bowl.

As I mentioned Racor offers replacement metal bowls for that filter so for under $30.00 your boat meets the standards... You'd have to google for the part # or just call Racor..

Thanks Maine
The new Catalina 5 series boats come with metal bowls. Since there is a dedicated filter locker outside of the engine compartment, I actually replaced the metal bowl for a plastic because I want to be able to do visual inspections. Interestingly it wasn't easy to find a clear bowl replacement....

My hull is #231 and came from the factory set up like PaulJ.

If the issue is that there is a potential for a fire in the engine compartment that will melt the plastic bowl, or maybe something will fly off the engine hit the plastic and break it and release fuel, or it just starts leaking, is great enough that it warrants the re-location of the filter, than what about the fuel lines themselves, they might catch fire and burn through, or just start leaking...better move those as well. I see a lot of these setups with catch bowls under, that might make sense, but moving it seems a bit overkill to me.

Want a metal bowl and don't like the inconvenience of not seeing what's inside, than put a pep-cock on the bottom of it and give it a drain every so often and see what comes out.

Fuel hoses are fire resistant; plastic bowl will melt way before the hose does. As far as why does an earlier model of boat not have the metal bowl or a dedicated locker? Changes get made as knowledge about potential problems grow and get incorporated into current standards. Frustrating but if things didn't change we would still be in the stone age...
