Hi All, I'm wondering if any Nonsuch owners have done an alternator upgrade to a Westerbeke 27 on a Nonsuch 30? Which model of Balmar or other brands will fit? What is the "case style" and how many amps would be possible. I' guessing with a 3/8 belt I would not want to go larger than a 100 amp...??

On a Westerbeke 58

We're dealing with a mostly dead alternator on the Nonsuch 36, running a Westy 58. We're looking to go back with a Balmar. Waiting to hear back from them regarding pricing and availability. My fiance's in charge of this project, but from what I understand, if they don't have the 100 amp available, I think the issue of wire guage comes into question wether we up it or go down. He was thinking a 9 series, (912-100) but now he's thinking a 6 series (621-100-sr-ig) with 2" mount foot and add a double sheave pulley. They're phasing out the 9s. I unfortunately don't know about the Westy 27. Realize that's a different engine size and boat than you're asking, but at least you're not alone in trying to come back with a Balmar. It may be worthwhile to sit still on the alternator and any other expensive changes till you've had a chance to get the know the boat really well, and how you use her systems. I'm slowly restoring my own little Marshall Sanderling 18 and pretty much gutted her--all of the wood was rotten-- before I ever got the chance of sailing her. Sometimes it's hard to continue with all the work not knowing what she'll feel like underway when I finally get her all back together. Think about spending your first year sailing, and then you can use your next winter to do upgrades and make changes. There is an upgrade on this boat I am very happy about. It's the Toilet. Electric Flush, and a household size bowl. If there's an upgrade you want to do now, that'll make your wife deliriously happy with you (especially if she knows the old practically tea-cup sized bowls like I do), try to upgrade in toilets. Worth every penny. To the extent that fiance is going to do that upgrade on his Hans Christian, and he's buying his parents a similar model for their anniversary to go on their Cal 46 ketch. Please make sure to use the proper hose so that smells don't leech. And yes, I disappeared entirely for that upgrade.

Toilet model?

I read your note and I'm interested in the electric toilet upgrade. Could you please give me the make and model of the bowl / flush unit? thanks!

Toilets (or Marine Head, properly)

It's a PHEII Raritan with a household size bowl. http://www.raritanengineering.com/products/toilets/manual/ph_2.html Russ suggests that if you're going to get an electric head, you should get a macerating one, which the Raritan isn't. The non-electric PHII is a very good manual head out there, simple, easy to get parts, works well. If you want a macerating head, do a Tecma. I love the Raritan, but I would lie cheat and steal for a Tecma. Raritan has macerating heads like the Atlantes, but they're more expensive than the Tecma, and the folks that we've met with the Tecma's have been not just happy with them, but Exuberant. They will drag you into their head compartment just to show off their Tecmas. http://www.tecma.net/nautica/silence/index.html <--that's Tecma's website. It's available in small bowl and large bowl sizes, and they also offer a matching bidet...

Rodd...

Did I miss something? Did you find a 30C? Congrats in order? With regard to the subject, I fully agree with Kristen. Unless something absolutely needs to be replaced, sail the boat for a year and use that time to make a list of possible upgrades. That's what I did and have never regretted it. Cheers, Bob

No I have not...

I fairly particular and every Nonsuch 30 I've looked at has been maintained, in what I consider to be, in a poor manner. I'm still looking and need to make a trip to Nova Scotia. One of the 30's was ok but then the owner went and painted the decks with a one part paint not AwlGrip! Ruined as far as I'm concerned unless you want to spend months and months restoring the decks and painting them the right way. Cut corners don't fly with me and I'm getting frustrated at what I'm seeing currently for sale. Oh and my boat does not yet have an official offer on it so I have some time..
