The Polysulfide filler between the tak boards on the seats in my cockpit is "melting" in several places. Not happening in the filler between the cockpit sole boards. I have used teak oil (the golden variety) on the seats - not on the sole. Any one else have such a problem? How do I eliminate it? I have sent a request for help to BoatLife - a prominent maker of the Polysulfide filler. Ken Johnson - "WindSong"

Colour wearing off.

Ken Have not experienced the caulking "melting" as such, but have noticed that the black tends to come off onto your feet whent sole of the cockpit is wet and thereby marks the white fibreglass elsewhere on the deck. I have only treated the teak with water. Regards Bill

Polysulfide replaced - problem solved

After much discussion with the Boat-Life folks, and a local craftsman who does repair work on teak decks, I determined that the problem was caused by the use of a golden teak oil on the cockpit teak. Something in the oil was attacking the rubber and causing it to turn into a liquid mess. The (painful) solution was to physically remove all of the sealant and replace it with new. I don't actually know the chemistry of the material applied originally by Bavaria - the new stuff is partly silicon-based, and should be permanent. I am not contemplating any teak oil or varnish or any other finish beyond keeping it clean

Thanks for all the research!

Ken Thanks for all your research - we have suffered the same problem on our cockpit seats too - again, after using teak oil - you would think that Bavaria would issue a warning not to use teak oil on their sub-standard filler!

Caulking problem

I have a similar problem but it only appears to be around the uppere section of the cockpit. Must have used a cleaning agent with something which disolves the caulking compound. It leaches black and is easially rubbed away - but of course returns which is a pain. Ken - great link to your mag - very nicely done. We nned something like that for Bavarias in Australia. Regards, GP
