I have had no luck finding a polar plot for the Capri 22 online. Is there one available somewhere?

I've looked, too, but without success. If you manage to find one, please post here!

Hershey, thanks for your post. Good to know there is that option. If I were serious about racing, I'd be tempted to pony up. But I just want to test myself, not sure I could justify the expense. Still very neat, though.

I found a iOS app in the App Store. It is iPolar by KND Sailing Performance and costs $10.99. It can generate polars based on only a few parameters (LOA, disp, mainsail area, and jib area; plus other optional data) and for several sail plans (JAM, spin, etc). It can also communicate polar data into iRegatta--a racing and cruising app available for iOS and Android phones. Unfortunately for us iPolar is most suitable for boats from 8 to 20m, so predictions for a 22 footer (6.7m) would be somewhat suspect.

Thanks for the update, Dbaltz. Too bad the Capri 22 doesn't quite fit the specs, looks like a neat app.

You aren't going to find polars for the Capri. I don't know if you really need them. If you are doing long distance races or 3 mile beats in open waters, sure I could see that. Just sail the boat fast!

Hey,
I wasn't able to find a plot for the Capri 22 or the Capri 26 but I did download the iPolar software and generate a couple of plots for each. They are probably both bogus but offer some insights into expected performance under various conditions.

Plots are an integrated feature of iRegatta software and I hope they will help a rookie become a better sailor.

None of the following reflects any spinnaker input. I used the following input parameters for the 22: LOA 22.0, Length waterline 20.0, Disp 2.3 klbs, Main area 140 sf, Jib area 101 sf, and Gen 146 sf.

Your comments and insights would be greatly appreciated, especially good data on wind and boat speeds that would allow me to tweak the plots.
Thanx,
Don

This is the data for Capri 22 jib. It is slow but I think the pattern is fair and you can push the velocities out to approach reality. All speeds are in KNOTS (1.15 mph). Top predicted speed in 20-30 its wind is 5.06 mph (but we know better).

Polars are not that hard to draw, but you MUST have good data.
Don, gimme good accurate numbers and I'll see what they look like.

I had some time this morning to mess around with this some.
This is from the first set - Capri jib.
Not too bad, but some suspicious lumpies where they shouldn't be. :)
But it should give an idea of how they are done.
Not hard, just a little time consuming.

Shows that she really likes the wind just forward of the beam!

Am I missing something here?
Can't we just make our own curves, empirically?

One just goes out sailing at various headings and keeps some notes about what sails we're using.
The GPS and a some sort of wind direction recorder keep the speed, boat heading, apparent wind direction, and wind speed notes. It might be a spreadsheet puzzle to pull true wind from apparent, but not impossible.

If you want to see if you're going as fast as possible, then two-boat testing is in order.
The two boats sail next to each other. Same heading, same sails, same hull trim, same ballast. Both boats trim for top speed. Slow boat gets to adjust to try and keep up with faster boat. Once you're both equal, start methodically adjusting settings to see what's faster and what's slower. it just takes time and discipline. :) There are plenty of starting points (rigging settings) for the Capri-22 available on line.
