Among owners of Catalina, Hunter, and Beneteau yachts, 91% of responding owners insure their boats and carry it a separate policy to do it, according to last week's Quick Quiz. Are you satisfied with your insurance coverage, both cost and benefit? Cover the topic here.

Boat US

Our new Hunter 240 was struck by ligntning last week. My dealer says that it should probably be totaled. My insurance is through Boat U.S. I will see what they will do for me.

1% versus 10% deductible

Check your policy for "catastophic storm" clause. We had a somewhat severe storm blow through CT and our boat was damaged. The insurance industry classified the storm as catastrophic since it did inland (read: houses) damage across NY, NJ, and DE. Our deductile went from $380 to $3800 based on the damage to HOMES. I've since switched to BOAT/US, and have been quite pleased with their rates, their policy coverage (no catastrophic clause) and their service.I urge all readers to compare their plan to that of Boat/us -- before it costs 10% of your boat's insured value.

The only company that I'm aware of with a 10% deductible is Hanover. Their policies are generally written through National Marine Underwriters in Annapolis. 10% deductible is a bitch.... Al Golden IMIS

Good Hands

We have used Allstate and found the cost to be reasonable, actually good by comparison. We had our Hunter 36 sink in Hurricane Fran and they paid full face value within a couple of weeks. They don't talk like boat experts, but they know how to insure boat. George
