overcharging from Honda outboard alternator

Hi there. My Catalina 25 has a Honda 8 hp outboard with electric start and a 12 amp alternator. I have one group 24 AGM, and a group 27 AGM battery. I'm concerned about overcharging these if I'm motoring for a few hours. I have had to motor for 6 or 8 hours against the wind before. I have a Morningstar pulse width modulation charge controller for my 11 watt solar panel, so I'm not worried about the solar panel. So my questions are: Is there a 3 step controller for outboard alternators? Do I need a combiner, an isolator, or some other device to protect my batteries? Is there a good source for diagrams, or even an electrical engineer to make me a diagram (I'm willing to pay for good advice, or buy the proper equipment from the person who provides the advice) There are lots of diagrams for inboards with separate starter and alternator wires, but not for an outboard which has a common wire for starter and alternator connecting the battery bank to the motor. I hope I have made sense here, and I thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Frank Gloss 1989 Catalina 25 wing keel "Northland"

Ooooh....I have a question about that, too!

I have a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke with an alternator and I've been wondering If I can hook it up my c-charger 5000 series battery charger to charge my house battery. Off hand I think it is a Group 24 'deep cycle' battery. Maybe I don't even go through the charger at all....I don't have a manual for the charger ... are there any good reference sites about this kind of thing? Or what's a good book that would answer this question? Thanks!

Honda 9.9 Charging

Now that it's on the table, I have observed my new Honda 9.9 charging to 15 volts and holding it there during prolonged motoring. Is this hard on group 27 flooded batteries? I have two in parallel.

same question as honda 9.9

I am also interested in this. I have an 88 honda 7.5. When testing the charging system with the motor running in a test tank, with a new group 27 battery connected, I saw as much as 5 amps at 14 volts, at high idle (out of gear). Nice to know I can recharge the battery pretty quickly if needed, but seems like I should unplug the charge cord after motoring for more than a short time, without a regulator. Has anyone installed an external regulator, recommendations ?

Hey Trevor

I've got the same motor as Rick. Great engine but no regulator. My son and his crew use the motor quite a bit as they motor out on calm days to go swimming. I leave the alternator connected (single 12 volt deep discharge battery). Am I running any risk? To try to be a bit more specific, I'd guess the motor averages about 3 hours a week, mostly at low to medium revs. I don't run anything regularly except the depth finder. Cabin and running lights and auto pilot are only run occasionally. Thanks for offering your expertise. One of many things that make this board awesome.

Don't feel bad Trevor

Hey Trevor. Don't feel bad, nobody else knows the answer to my questio either. I contacted Balmar, and they didn't have anything to add either. They referred me to a company which sells combiners, which isn't really what I, or anybody else needs to "smart charge" their batteries from their outboard.
