Sailed our 240 for the first time this season in light air. All went well except for the outhaul. No matter how often I pull it tight (its the kind where the line runs inside the boom and is supposedly secured at the mast end of the boom with that little trigger with the teeth on it) it quickly releases and I have a saggy mainsail. Am thinking of trying larger line (the current line is 5/16) to see if that holds better. Not sure if a cleat on the bottom of the boom would be advisable. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Bill Welsch s/v Renewal

outhaul,

Our h23 has 3 lines in boom, 1989 model and still no slippage, do the other lines slip? are all lines same size on your boat,?,same size little catches, ? sounds strange, sometimes you need to sort of pull back to get the thing to catch, then it stays, good luck Mike

Slipping outhaul

Bill, I have an 1988 H23 and when I 1st got it, I noticed some slipping of the outhaul also. My solution was to replace the line. Fresh line resolved the problem. Replacing the line is an interesting task in that the outhaul on a 23 is a 3 part system inside the boom. It's do-able but you do have to remove the gooseneck end for the process. Have you worked with pop rivets before?

Outhaul

My 1988 h23 had the same problem. I inspected the triggers cleats and saw that they had worn. ie: grooved like a rode burn. Not knowing where I could find replacements, and being in a hurry to try out the new open footed main sail I decided to install a small jam cleat on the boom at the end near the goose neck. Woks great and no more slippage.

Cleat

I have a '99 240. I have three cleats on my boom and one of them is at the bottom for the outhaul line. Never had a problem with it slipping. Has Hunter changed the design on this? I would contact the dealer and/or Hunter. Maybe Hunter is trying to cut costs??? Enjoy your new boat! Dan s/v Brigitta '99 h240
