What does this group choose to use when installing through bolts in the deck for weather proofing. I am replacing a padeye (u-bolt) for the standing rigging on my boat. Because of the strain I am not sure what to use.

Rub-a-dub don't use tub.

Marvin: You need something that is UV resistant. Tub sealant is silicone and you know what Peggie P. says about this stuff (don't use it.) I think that the Life Caulk is an excellent product. You need something that will NOT shrink and stays plyable. The West Marine catalog has a section that outlines many of the sealants that they sell. Take a look at that and see what they have to say.

3M 5200 Adhesive/Sealant

3M 5200 is great, is reliable both, above and below the water line. Won't use anything else on my boat.

Both are good products but

Boat Life and 5200 are both good products. However, do not tighten bolts real hard at first. Let the caulk firm up (several days) before you tighten down. Even then, don't go crazy. Let the caulk form a gasket then snug down the fitting. Too tight and you will deform the gasket that you just made.

This Old Boat

I'm reading "This Old Boat" by Don Casey. He has a section on sealants, adhesives, and glues. 3M 5200 is great if you want to glue and seal things together, Silicon sealant is great for gaskets (don't tighten until it has cured), and poly sealant is great for everything else. He also covers fiberglass repairs, wires and rigging, and lots more. Great book!
