Ok I bought this boat sight unseen from the Greatlakes and trucked it to Va. Supposed only problem was prop shaft seal. I am handy so no biggie After making a new shaft, painting, cleaning, fixing the wiring, and rebuilding the water pump. We sat it in the water, started to sink Opps, cracked Hull I have it running and in the local Marina It runs well, changed points, plugs, head gasket, opened up water hose pipe size into the block, flushed etc. It quits running after about 1 hour out, slowely loosing power untill it quits put put miss miss put put untill she fades The exh looks like its blowing some steam, I replaced the tem guage and have the engine running at 135 it was previously at 155 F. Help This boat has me baffled, and the tax man thinks its worth 15k With taxes like this and problems that I can not solve, it may sink Thanks in advance dhoodenpyl@aol.com

When it quits

running do a compression check. Your valves may be adjusted a little too close and when they get hot are not closing completely. as for the steam make sure the injector elbow in the exhaust is not fouled and reducing water flow.

Atomic 4 ?

Ahoy Dano, If your engine is a gas engine like the Atomic 4 check your coil. It is a common problem with the A-4 The coil breaks down after it gets hot. The engine just sputters to a stop. After awhile she will start right up again, like nothing ever happened. Fair Winds and Happy New Year Cap'n Dave

Coil

I tried the coil and replaced it They auto shop had 2 versions, one with resistor and 1 without I installed the coil with resistor There were about 4 coils inside the boat when we cleaned it out. Suspected coil right away Someone also said maybe its 24VDC Anyone know for sure? I assumed 12Dc and used a car coil

Warped Head?

Did you have the head machined or checked for cracks? Sounds just like a water cooled VW engine I had years back. New everything, and the head was warped, and cracked, and as it heated up, it would act the same as yours. New head took care of the problem . Just a thought.

Let's stay with the coil a little bit longer

Ahoy Dano, Did you happen to see a ballast resistor in the boats ign. wireing? If there is one it could be bad. Check the voltage going to the coil. If it is about 6 volts then you have an external ballast. While cranking you should get 12 volts to the coil and then after the engine starts the coil should go to around 6. Check to see if the coil is hot. One fix was to move the coil to a bulkhead off the engine. If you are sure all is ok with the ign. system, then go the the carb. Does it make a differance if you pull the choke out when it starts to die. Will the engine run better. If it improves, then the carb is the problem. Another question is your engine a late model or early model A-4. Fair Winds and Happy New Year Cap'n Dave
