I think the objective is to sail the thing, and a folder/featherer makes a really big diference in boat performance when you are not racing, so why agonize over optimizing for the prop? Having said that, most of my racing is long distance and some of them require a certain amount of motoring in the cruising class which adds a degree of PITA to the whole thing since you have to account for VMG vs. motoring penalty, when to best motor, etc. Just another element to interject. Feathering or Folder Hands Down
We switched over from a two blade fixed to 3 blade feathering (Autoprop). The performance of our Hunter 34 significantly outweighs the 6 PHRF points the prop cost us.
