Can some one tell me the easiest way to remove the waste oil from my Yanmar 3GM30F? Is it through the dipstick? It looks very small, less then 1/4".

oil removal

I use a 12 volt pump (availabe at most marine stores less then $40)designed for oil removal. Use the dip stick tube-works very well.

Vacumm Pump

I use a vacumm pump from West Marine. They run about $50. It looks like a bicycle tire pump on steroids. Very easy to use through the dip stick shaft. I have the same engine in our 1993 H33.5. Make sure to warm the engine before use. This pump also comes in handy for other jobs like sucking that last little bit of water out of the bilge, changing your transmission oil, etc etc. Jeff

Through the dip stick

It doesn't remove 100% of the old oil, but it is close. I am afraid if you removed the drain plug it might start leaking lator. The one thing that you don't want is oil in the bilge.

Drain Plug

In a post I found in the archives, someone suggested tapping a plug into the pan. Any thoughts on this?

Two problems,

The first is that it's tricky working on aluminum because of the need to avoid galling. The next one is to do it right, you have to pull the engine. The next is you now have a source for a leak and major failure at the wrong time. It's much safer and easier to just forget it. Let's see 1,2,3,, oops too many, scratch one. :)

Vacum pump

Suck it out thru the oil dipstick tube with an electric or manual pump. Pretty simple and easy process. Warm the engine first so the oil flows easier, suck it out, change oil filter, refill with fresh oil and you're done. Be sure to take your old oil to an approved oil dump. Most big chain auto parts stores will do this for free. I am able to w/d about 4 qts out of my 3GM, I use a manual "Tempo" pump. Good Luck. Bob F.

Oil Change without spilling a drop

As was already stated a vacuum pump works well in removing engine oil. After many years of trying to use drill and hand pumps I came across a little vacuum pump called a Pela 2000 in a marine store. Its capacity 2/3 gallon may require you to use it twice to pull out all the oil. What is good about the unit is its size and cleanliness. Before using this pump there was always a lot of oil dripped on the floor and elsewhere. And it stores in the box it came in about a 10" cube. In operation it works the same as other vacuum pumps. If you are going to buy a pump it is worth a look.
