I have a 5HP long shaft Tohatsu motor I bought with only a few hours on it that has been sitting on a saw horse for awhile. I laid it on its side (on the handle per the manufacturers instructions) and when I set it on a saw horse, oil came out of the prop area. Probably a teaspoon or less. I am taking it to put on my MacGregor today.

My question is if this is normal. The boat place said it is where unburned oil will come out and said it was common. I have it in the back of my truck now. When I laid it down, a few drops came out but it stopped. Just wondering on people's experience.

We also have a 5 HP, Nissan==same outboard if it is the 4 stroke. I wouldn't worry much about it, but would check the lower end fluid level. I think the manual is on=line if you don't have one. I change the fluid there since I didn't know how long it had been before it had been serviced.

Also just keep a check on the crankcase level again if it is a 4 stroke. They are good motors,

I have Tohatsu 4 hp four stroke that I bought about 2005 or so. I believe its the same motor.

If I lay it down according to the picture on the outboard but with the prop supporting the weight of the bottom end, it will leak bottom end oil out the prop - pretty much exactly like you describe.

But if I support the bottom end NOT on the prop, it never leaks a drop.

I think its the prop shaft distorting an oil seal allowing some of the gear oil to leak out.

Likely you have no problem (or I also have the same problem and just dont know it..). The prop now never supports any weight, no more oil leak.

Well I feel better now. I did change and add new foot oil and replaced the gaskets on the screws. I am going to put a bottle of motor oil on the boat for "just in case" scenarios. I am prettys toked about getting this installed. My Yachtmaster has been in the shop since summer, waiting on an exhaust manifold gasket from the factory.

I finally got tired of waiting and bouth this Tohatsu 5HP from a guy that on ly used it a few hours and then found a new hobby. The motor inside looks brand new.
