Has anyone tried to rework their 34's head/holding tank arrangement? Our 15 gallon tank is too small for extended cruising, but replacing it with a bigger unit appears daunting--to say the least. Any advice would be appreciated. Also any wisdom on new hopper would be welcome .Ours seems to be tired and the rebuild kit is pricey. "Frolic" is a 1984 model.

How much bigger?

Fred, how much bigger you wanting to go? I spent the past weekend replacing all the hoses on my '83 O'Day 34 and though I didn't replace the tank (!) my recollection of it's placement is that it would be easier than replacing all the hoses! Our setup has a manual overboard pump (Gusher-type) tee'd off from the tank outflow. That takes up some room on the starboard side, not much, but enough to figure into any calculations for placing another tank in there. The hoses, I mean. My guess is that the tank size is limited by the access hatches, which are fairly narrow - right? Can you get two tanks in there, and would two tanks work? Peggy? Or would you cut a larger access hatch farther forward? Or remove the v-berth altogether? You might also try this question with the O'Day 34/35 group, small though it is. Emails go straight to the members. Just click the link. I'm interested in following this thread, as we're about to cast off for two weeks down the CA coast......... and maybe I'll be primed for more holding tank storage when we're done! O'Day 34 Holding Tank

When I bought my boat the previous owners had removed the whole system but still had all the parts. The head was plumbed direct to the seacock so they were only using the unit when they were 3 miles offshore. I re-installed the tank, macerator pump, y-valve for deck discharge, etc. I can attest that a larger tank will not fit through the access cutouts in the v-berth. Another option might be a flexible tank in the starboard hanging locker? I find the best answer is don't use it. Save it for the ladies and just pee in a beer bottle for the men. Make sure you dispose of the beer bottle properly. Dave

Thanks for the information,Dave. The small bin openings in the vee berth platform are the barrier, for sure. Fred

Mike, I would like to get a 28 gallon tank in place. We cruise the Great Lakes and pumping over the side is not an option. The access is the problem as you point out. If we come up with a solution,I will post.In the meantime, have a great cruise and thanks for the help. Fred
