When my boat is underway water comes up through the lower half of the rudder post. I've had the boat hauled and they said the post looked OK. It still leaks. HelpDean Gustafsondgustafson@socal.rr.com
Dean -I think you're talking about water coming through the gland, is that correct? If so, I would find someone who has repacked a stuffing box to show you how they do it. If it still leaks, I'd have another shop have a look. Its fairly common for glands to leak a little bit, but they shouldn't leak much, and its it possilbe to have any leaking be negligable.Justin - O'day Owners' Web
I owned a 28' for ten years. Had the rudder out a couple of times!!! There is no packing in that system...there is a small bushing between the quadrant and the bottom of the post and one between the hull and the rudder itself. There is also a small greese fitting located on the rudder post. The greese not only ensures the smooth operation of the rudder but also acts as a water barrier. Using a high quality greese, greese this post ( turning it several times) until greese begins to emerge from either (or) the bottom of the quadrant or onto the top of the rudder. That should help.
