O'Day 222 Mast Rigging

I just purchased an O'Day 222, and I have a question about the rigging.

There do not seem to be stay spreaders, and the previous owner, no novice sailor, said she did not remember any though she had a boat yard to the rigging for her. I can't imagine the mast without spreaders but could this be the case with the O'Day 222?

If she does need spreaders, how do they attach to the mast? Any advice helpful.

I had an O'Day 22, so not the same and I had spreaders.

A few searches on images showed spreaders on all of the images I could see the rigging on. Not a absolute answer but hope that helps.

Helps

It does help- I am sure there are spreaders, despite my belief in the sailing competency of the prior owner. Do you have any pictures of yours? That might help.

Just checked all my old pictures. Afraid nothing of mine that shows the spreaders.

I know a couple people with O'day 222s. Yes, there are definitely spreaders on that boat.

You might want to give Rudy at D&R Marine a call (he is usually too busy for email) to discuss. The website does show spreaders for sale for $65 a pair, but these fit only the Dwyer mast, not the Z-Spars mast. http://www.drmarine.com/products.asp?cat=165

The Dwyer cross section is elliptical, the Z-Spars mast had a flat aft side.

Thank you all for your prompt responses. I'll start by finding out which manufacturer made the mast.

DR Marine looks like a great resource as well.

Yes, the 222 had spreaders. Exactly how they attach to the mast depends on which brand of mast your boat has, O'DAY used at least 2 different sparmakers for the 222 (and 192). In general the inboard ends of hte spreaders should fit into or over a pair of brackets on the mast (about 1/2 way up mast) then a clevis pin secures them to the brackets. The upper shrouds will then fit into notches at the outer ends of the spreaders and will be siezed to hte spreaders with short lengths of stainkless-steel wire. The ends should them be taped over to protect the sails fro many sharp edges (rubber or leather spreaders boots could be added for even better protection).

Sounds like the mast may have been switched out at some point. Tough to add spreaders to a mast without the proper attachment points. The original 222 definitely had spreaders. Good luck. A great boat. Just had my 100th sail on ours! DR is a great resource. Also oday owners.
