I just purchased an O'day 20 and need some help with the location of the battery and outboard fuel tank. I assume it's under the starboard cockpit seat hatch, but don't have a good feel for where they are mounted. There are remnants of wood brackets down there, so there may have been good bracket locations at some point in time, but I don't know the arrangement. I have no problem building and glassing new brackets. Just need some help on where the items were located. Any help is appreciated.

Inside the cockpit locker could be a good spot for the battery, although I suspect from a weight distribution standpoint, in the cabin under the forward end of the cockpit foot well would be better since it would place the weight closer to the middle of the boat. You absolutely DO NOT want the gas tank ANYWHERE below deck!!! One leak combined with gas fumes and the first spark below decks would be followed by KABOOM! (Or at least could happen). The gas tank should be strapped down in the aft end of the cockpit, preferable on supports to allow air and water flow under it, and then a cover built to protect the tank from the weather and prevent theft. Alternatively, a locker could be built into the cockpit seat either port or starboard, sealed off from the inside of the boat, that would be designed to allow any leaks and fumes to drain into the cockpit and out the scupper. This locker would need to be vented (a louver on the side to the cockpit would be fine). I'll post a couple of pics below showing what O'DAY built into later boats for stowing the fuel tank. The 2 pictures (fuel tank a1 and a2) are showing the locker we built in the cockpit foot well on our old CAL 21. The I just spotted a good picture on Facebook of how the owner of another O'DAY 20 stows the gas tank, similar to our CAL2 setup.
