I've noticed that a "mast float" is now an optional accessory for the H170. Anybody seen it? Wondered if it's a "Hobie Bob" type thing or something altogether different. I could have used one when I went turtle in St Andrew Bay FL.

You're right

Probably prevents turtling, which in the case of a 17 could result in the mast popping out and heading further south.

Heading further south ?

only if the boat is going south with it ! The mast has two sets of shroud lines that secure it in place along with the forestay. nor is it likely the mast would slip from the deck securing plate, there is just too much tension on the shroud lines that would stop this from happening. Glenn

Nice picture.......

the 170 sure is a good looking boat. I used the mast float my self after turtling, if you ever turtle, you don't ever want it to happen again. I've since foamed and sealed my mast which has proven out well and no longer using the Hobbie Mast style float. For those of you who have a 170, do something to prevent your boat from turling, its a lot of hard work to right it and most likely you wont be able to right the boat with out the assistance of at least one power boat and several other able persons. once you have a float or foam and seal your mast, capsizing is no big deal and you can right the boat very easily your self in a matter of minutes.

Dale's float

Hobie makes three mast floats - is your's the Baby Bob or Moma Bob? I've emailed Hunter for more info on what they're offering - I'm hoping their lack of response is a plant shutdown for the holidays. BTW - where was that picture taken?

Mast Float

The one Ive got works great. Ive had it on its side afew times and as long as you dont stay in the boat when its on its side it will stay on its side. It will turtle if you take to long climbing back over the top to set it back up. Youve got probably 2 minutes to climb or you can let it set on its side all day long.

Second (or fifth?) what's been said re: float

Hi folks, I agree with all that's been said here, especially the part about some sort of mast floatation being recommended for H170 owners. We recently traded up to a Compac 19, but I turtled our 170 once in a squall blast and me and two dudes who happened to be powerboating nearby and jumped in to help couldn't budge my 170 back over. We all three dug our toes into the inverted rubrail and pulled on the c/b, but the 170 didn't even acknowledge our existence (and the other two dudes were gravitationally-challenged, to say it nicely--- so you'd think we'd have budged her). Took a big four-stroke 'jetski' on the topping lift to do the job. Foaming/sealing the mast, or Hobie float are highly recommended. Winter winds, Mike G. "Freebird", CP19
