I finally blew my main out, bad. She was really old, and needed replacing, but I sure fixed her this time. I was on the radio trying to get the regatta off in 30 + winds, not paying attention, and had the killer accidental jibe. Wow.
Anyway, I would like suggestions for best mains. I need some life span; could not afford new sails every 3 years. Radial cut? Dacron or other? I will go for loose foot, for sure. Any suggestions would be of help. I am glad to see Alan still at it. I could use your input, Alan.

Thanks, Chaos

Captain, There has been a lot of discussions about Dacron vs Kevlar mains. Many think that Dacron fabric will last longer than others. Your old Dacron main might have been 20 years old or maybe older? Question is not if the fabric was still there but how well was it still holding a reasonable shape. Most Dacron sails are blown out after 10 years but skippers keep using them because they're not completely torn to shreds. My last two mains were all Kevlar. The reason being that Kevlar is a much lighter yet stronger fabric. It holds its designed shape for much longer and at higher wind strengths. If you give your main a reasonable amount of care it will last you a long time while still maintaining a good shape. This means for example not allowing the leach to flutter. How many skippers do you see allowing their sails to destroy themselves due to improper or negligent sail trim?

Shop around and get some samples of sail cloth. You will quickly see the benefit of Kevlar. Also ask you sail maker about 'seconds'. Fabric seconds will many times have simple cosmetic flaws with no structural issues and be available at much reduced cost. Talk with your sail loft for advise on these issues.

Good Luck, let us know how it goes.
