Dear Peggie, I will be installing a new holding tank in the bow portion of a 1988 Hunter 37.5. The head is located midship next to the old holding tank. We have concluded that the bow area under the "V" Berth is the most suitable area for the new holding tank. The tank will be above the water line with the new discharge and tank vent going through the deck above the new tank. I plan to run a 1 1/2" pipe straight from a Raritan PHII Manual Head to the holding tank. I require an 18 inch lift on a 15 foot run. I plan to take the lift next to the toilet and have allowed for 4 inches of fall over the 15 foot run. Do I require a vented loop in the system? Don't want to go any higher with my pipe run, but would like the system to work well. You advice would be appreciated. P.S. Am in possession of Peal product for new holding tank and plan to start sailing season on a fresh note.

Install a vented loop

Although a tankful of effluent won't sink a boat, even a half-full tank can run back toward the head when you're heeled. Without the vented loop, the only thing preventing it from overflowing the bowl is the joker valve in the head discharge...and unless you're the one boat owner in a million who replaces it before it literally falls apart, it won't prevent it. A vented loop is a small price to pay to make sure you'll never have a mess to clean up. Btw...if you haven't bought the tank yet, we offer a number of bow-shaped tanks (97 non-rectangular shapes altogether)...fittings custom sized and located to your specs at the factory when the tank is made for you.
