I bit the bullet and repowered Vegabond #1870 (1973) last year. The
engine of choice was the Yanmar 2 gm. It was $11k installed by a
yard
in Jamestowm RI. There was quite a bit of work in grinding down the
engine bed. The engine hasn't seen many hours yet so I will be able
to say more after the coming season.
By the way what finally killed the MD6a was a broken exhaust pipe
inside the the rubber jacket. The pipe had parted and allowed water
to get back into the engine. Given that the engine was 27 years old,
I figured it was time.
