My keel and a sand bar.........

"OK", today I did it. Hit a sand bar and had to power out backwards. What kind if damage or distruction did I do to the dagger board? How much abuse will it will take? It did come up all right but I am concerned about twisting and back ward force on the hull and related areas. BillO

Damage from grounding, probably none if not locked down. Twisting and motoring around, potentially serious although they somehow usually tolerate it. Best to raise the keel immediately just enough to get free, too much and you have steering-leeway-ballast problems. I assume you mean a swingkeel when you say 'daggerboard' for that boat.

Me too!

I got stuck in a mud bar once too. The boat just came to a stop. I managed to rock it off using the motor. No damage. But the worst part was some danged kid wading out and trying to take over the boat. Guess he just saw a pirate movie or something. His booty! My boat!

keel issue

You should be okay if it was only sand or mud. I just had a keel hang up due to oyster accumulation and was pushed into a sand bar due to high winds in our area. I had the same concerns. Only if your boat agrounds in a sideward motion or strong angle could a serious problem arise. At least that has been my experience.

How to check for damage......

If the bolt holes for the swing keel pivot bolt and the locking bolt aren't elongated, there isn't any damage. The worse that could have been done IF the holes are not elongated, is the possibility of bent bolts. That's no big deal.

Swing or Dagger that is the question

Is a 25 a swing keel like a Mac 26X or is it a dagger baord like a 26M ?? Don
