My 310 Lists to port

I wonder if anyone has experienced this problem. My 310, hull #297, lists to port. The list is about 2 degrees. I first observed this when I noticed that while at dock the rainwater always gathers on the port side of the cockpit. When I bought my '05 310 3 years ago I noticed that there was a gash under the starboard fin of the keel, probably from a hard grounding. There doesn't seem to be any loss of material so I don't think this would be the cause. I have only a normal amount or material in my starboard cockpit locker. Also, I've noticed that she points better on a port tack & I assume it's because there is more weight on the port side. Has anyone experienced this problem?

It's normal for this boat. Both the holding tank, batteries and more of the fuel tank is on the port side. Not sure if mine points any better, it should in theory sail flatter and faster, like having extra crew as rail meat on the port side.

Thnaks for your help. I guess you've observed the same thing (i.e. rain water drains to the port side). It's been bugging me but I glad to hear that there's nothing wrong w/ my boat. But I would have thought that the designers would have realized this and done something to balance the boat. In the mean time, I'll try to use the head as little as possible

Being in the southern hemisphere and gravitational effects of the earths rotation this so called list has been counteracted...........in other words mines dead flat and level LOL:dance:

Really! Full of fuel and holding tank more than 1/2 full? How many Batteries do you have and where are the located?

My C310 has lead ballast located in the spaces behind the settee on the port side. I wonder if the stove, galley lockers, water heater (20 gallon) all located on the starboard side might be affecting the list. The holding tank should not normally be full - the hot water tank would always be full. Also, I only keep a LPG bottle on the starboard side.

I work on an 800 foot long drillship. We report any addition/subtraction of weight over 500 kg quarterly; you would be shocked at how it adds up over time.

Regards,

Chris

I think I have to go along with Witzend’s observations/reasoning. Whilst I have not noticed any adverse effects on my walking balance across the deck, my boat seems to collect rain or dew water on the port side. Even my furling mast, which occasionally retains about ½ a bucket of water after heavy rain, discharges any seepage to the portside. Seagulls seem to prefer this side too.
I obviously don’t seem to benefit from Blute’s gravitational effects in Sydney.
Chris, how do you notice the lead ballast behind the settee? Just curious if I’ve got that too.

The lead ballast I have in the port settee are the Batteries (3) 8Ds, (2) in the normal location and one under the longer seat. I have never have seen any lead at that location. Pics please?

Lead ballast - Port side

Hello Witzend:

I visited the yard yesterday to check on the winter cover, etc. We had high winds with gusts to 80 knots here on Friday.

While I was there I took pictures of the lead ballast described in my earlier post.

Are these lead blocks just lying loose? If so just remove them, to help level your boat.
Not sure why they would be there in the first place?

Yes, the blocks are loose in the cubby hole. However, they would not be easy to remove. I have always thought they were placed there during the newbuild by Catalina. Perhaps I am wrong but I thought they put every new boat in a tank to assess the trim and list and added ballast accordingly (I read this in a magazine but perhaps it was for a different manufacturer).

To be honest, I have never had any concern about the boat listing to port. It was DoctorSail that originally posted concerns with list to port.

I am in the process of replacing the water heater which is located to starboard of the centerline. Originally, I was going to go with a six gallon heater instead of the OEM installed 20 gallon heater but decided to go with the latter. The difference would have been approximately 120 pounds less causing the boat to list more to port.

In the spring after I launch the boat I will look at how she sits in the water. Perhaps I have a port list and never noticed it.

Cheers,

Chris

I put lead weights under the starboard settee, with a false floor over the weights, and then water and soda storage over the false floor. Seems to help a bit. Hull #231.

Yup, the very best addition of lead is in batteries. Why anyone would use lead that doesn't store electricity is beyond me.
