motor questions

After four years of trial and error I think I have all of my outboard quirks figured out and can motor successfully, but I have one more question. When I am in the boat, sitting in the rear, the water intake is under water, but if I go foward, or step out of the boat (at a shallow mooring, for example), the water intake is right about at the surface. It bobs up and down in the waves. There is always water flowing out of the motor where it should be, but at times, just for split seconds, the sound of the motor will change when the intake bobs up. Am I going to burn out my engine?????? I have heard people talk about a "long shaft" motor on this forum, I have no idea what I have other than it is a Merucry 3.3 hp. Maybe I need a different motor. Another alternative is that I could discard the plastic motor mount and make a slightly shorter one, I have some good size scraps of cherry or ash in the shed that might even qualify as "bright work." any thoughts?? john

yes...you will shorten the life of the engine.

a long shaft motor is a motor with an extended lower end so that the motor reaches lower in the water. If you can notch or lower you exsisting motor mount to keep the intake in the waterthat would certainly help.

motors are nice

I am very thankful to have a motor on my boat this year and would strongly recommend it to others who boat on bigger lakes. I find myself more willing to go out on light wind days, not worried that I will get stranded if the wind dies. Went out with my wife this weekend. Pleasant, light breeze, so I turned the tiller and mainsheet over to my wife for her to practice. She sailed for about a half hour, practicing maintaining a heading and tacking. Eventually the breeze died completely leaving us a couple miles from shore on a glass smooth lake. We fired up the 2.0 horse and headed on in.

Your going to burn out your impeller

You won't "burn out" the engine, you'll toast your water pump impeller, a very bad thing. Make sure your water intake is ALWAYS in the water when running.
