I will be in Mobile, AL (by car) next week. Looking the area over for possible relocation. Will be looking at dry lot property around the eastern shore. Wondering where the marinas with dockage for 40', 5.5 ft draft are located.

East Side of Mobile Bay

Was just over in that area a couple of weeks ago. We were in Pt.Clear for a couple of days. Not much around that area. There are a couple of marinas, but lots of shallow water. We were in a Hunter 36 that draws 4'6", and were nervous.

Mobile Bay

The marine maps show a decent depth in most of Mobile Bay with some obstructions. The online map at map view was datad 1992. Has the bay filled in with all the hurrican activity? Possibly need to explore the western side??? Don't want to be far from the boat dock time wise.

Mobile bay marina's

Kerry, Having a 5.5 draft will not be a problem on the bay. The bottom is mostly silt and the average depth is 8 ft. +. There are very few if any obstructions from the storm. As far as docking goes. The only choices on the eastern shore are Fairhope yacht club which I am sure has a long waiting list for slips and Fly Creek Marina. I am not sure of the condition of the channel there, but it is used regulary. The only other option on that side is at the Grand Hotelin Point Clear. I have not been there much but it can be a very rough place to dock and has little protection. There are many more places on the western shore. Mobile Yacht club has a good marina, clubhouse and sailing community. Also Turner Marine at the Dog River bridge has a very good marina and yard with many services. There are 3 more marina's close to the bridge but I am not sure about the availbility of slips. You may want to consider Turner's for a while and look into the Yacht club once you have found your way around. The drive over will be a little bit of a hassle, but the marina options on the western shore are better. If you like to sail you will enjoy the area, many times you will have the bay all to yourself and there are many nice crusing grounds near by. Also if you like to race there are fun races during the week and a larger regatta once a month Bob

Mobile Bay area

Most of the home developements I found on the internet seemed to be on the east side, so that is where I was planning to start looking. How much of a hassel is it to go from fairhope and the areas around it time wise? If you know of any retirement type developements on the west side that would be better access, let me know. I did get some info on Turner Marina, but was hoping there might be something on the east side. I am just in the explorer mode right now, but a trip to Birmingham made the explorer mode kick into action. I have researched from Charleston to Corpus Christi for the best place for boat and body..

Mobile area

Kerry, The drive from Fairhope to the western shore will take 45 to 60 minutes depending on the time of day. Fly Creek Marina may be your best bet in Fairhope to dock the boat. I would call them to check out the depths and availability. Fairhope and the eastern shore is a nice place to live, but Mobile has alot to offer. One of the larger real estate companies in the area is Roberts Brothers, they may have a website where you could find out more about property for sale on both sides of the bay. Bob
