Hi Everybody,

I almost gave up on sailing, placed a classified on Craigs and eveything, but I had second thoughts and decided to stick with it a bit longer. Finding this forum has also helped and led me to buy a Tiller Tamer and Boomkicker (no more brain damage from falling boom).

I've had a 2003 Hunter 146 for three years, been out on lakes about 10 times, and still can't sail. I've read the books, wathced video, memorized the vocabulary, etc. But when I get on the water, I'm lost and can't tell the wind direction even with a windvane and telltales. I must be meteorologically challenged. :)

If there's an experienced sailor in Connecticut that would like to go sailing on my 146, or I will crew for you in your boat, please let contact me.

Also, is there a way to browse more than a weeks worth of posts?
Thanks,

Paul

Mentoring.. learning the wind...

You know - I'm not familiar with what goes on in your area - but- sailing-wise, as a former Commodore of a racing yacht club - you might want to see if there's any racing going on in yrou area. You can volunteer to crew- and that way, can watch and listen - and even ask questions of the skipper - to get the idea of what's going on. Perhaps that'd give you a chance to get a feel for it more.... I learned a lot by doing that.

Best wishes! Julie

Sailing School

Paul,

I joined a sailing class through my local parks system, I think I paid $65.00 for 16 hours which was 4 hours on Saturday for 4 weeks.

I really enjoyed the class and we were all new to sailing and new very little about sailing.

We had about 30 minutes of dock side lessons followed by 3 hours of sailing.

We sailed on Capri 14.2 with two to a boat so each person got equal sail time.

The instructors (all volunteers) were a great instructors making the learning experience fun.

Your on the right track, see if you can find some one you can sail with or have that person sail with you.

I think the best way to sail is hands on with a good instructor.

Dont give up, your doing okay if you have been out 10 times by your self !

Check out

Check out some marina's in your area and ask
questions and look at all the boats and ask
if some one can help you learn or tell you
where a good place you can get some lessons.

I have a 146 in CT

Hi, fellow 146 owner!!
Have you ever tried sailing on Lake Candlewood?

It is a terrible place to sail!! ;)
Very changeable wind conditions, and on weekends, lots of jetskis, skiers, power boaters, but I call it home... ;)

I am by by no means an expert, but I do know a decent amount of the theory, and the practice.
Not sure how far Bristol is from i84 exit 11, but I sail out of that southernmost cove there, and perhaps we can work something out.

WHere do you usually sail? And is a weekday sail a possibility?

BTW, I know of no way to serach less than a week, other than going to the archives. I kinda wish they would upgrade the forum software. I also can't figure out how ot get notification of posts, though I've set it up.

Good luck!

(BTW - the tip of volunteering to crew at a local place is a great one - as are the other suggestions here.)
