I 've just taken delivery of a new 146 and am wondering if it's safe to walk the mast up from inside the boat, while on the trailer, or does this place too much stress on the cockpit floor? Also, I'm considering mounting a higher profile tire on the tiny 8" wheels of the trailer that comes with the boat-any thoughts on this retrofit? Thanks for your input.

Mast Stepping/Trailer Tire Fit

Darren, There should be no problem with stepping the mast while the boat is on the trailer. However, the changeout of tires may need a little research before you modify your trailer. You may want to call the dealer and/or the mfg to verify there are no safety issues. On the water! Jim M H-146 TIKI

Mast Stepping

I have a 170 and ALWAYS complely rig the boat while on the trailer (wind direction, power lines and landing layout may mess this up however), including raising sails when possible. This keeps you on freindly terms at the landings as you can rig the boat while letting people pass you by. When you drop it in you simply power up and you are gone! I don't see why the 146 would be any different. You are on your own for the tires. I prefer twelve inchers also.

Mast Stepping

I always step the mast just before I back the boat into the water. Takes about five minutes. I don't know about raising sail before you have the boat in the water and ready to take off from shore. One bit of side wind or freak gust and you'll be trying to figure out how to get your boat off of the boat ramp deck!
