I am restoring a 1967/68 O day /Rhodes 19 sail boat with Center board and tip-up rudder. The aft edge of the rudder is fitted with a cable that runs up a groove in the upper(fixed) part of the rudder assembly and over a small pulley. What happens next? It looks like the cable pulls the rudder up. What pulls it down? The rudder is wood and not weighted. Respond to palmtree22@ewol.com Thanks, Ed E

Downhaul

Ed, There should be another line on the front of the blade to pull the rudder down. Is there any indication of where it was attached if its missing? I don't usually tie my rudders down anyway. I tighten the sides of the rudder assembly to hold the rudder down, but if I hit something the rudder will pop up before it breaks. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Rubber mechanisn

My Mariner has a similar rudder and last weekend at a local sailing class I had the privilege of going out in a Rhodes 19 with a similar rudder. If you can hang on a bit, I'll ask the owner when I see him how it works - he did have a bit of trouble dropping the rudder, but seemed surprised at the trouble. My guess is that you pull on the line and it pulls the rudder up a bit to get past some kind of a stopper and when you release the line, the rudder drops. Will confirm and let you know - meanwhile, remember this is just my uninitiated guess. Dave
